INDIANA
LEGISLATURE.

Our Legislature convened on Monday last, and entered upon its duties. We are permitted by Dr. J. R. Mendenhall to make an extract from a hasty letter received from a friend in Indianapolis:

"The elections took place yesterday, and resulted as follows: T. J. Evans, Speaker of the House, J. T. Elliott, Clerk; W. G. Armstrong, Assistant; Winship, Enrolling Clerk; Fisher, Door keeper, and Rogers, Sergeant-at-arms. In the Senate, C. H. Test, was chosen Clerk; W. H. Martin of Rush, Assistant; Hannah of this place Enrolling secretary; Hart, Door keeper, and Moore Sergeant-at-arms.

Since the above was put in type we have received from the editors of the Indiana Journal the following report of the proceedings, by the express mail.

The Senate proceeded to the election of a Principal Secretary, when, on counting the ballots, it appeared that Charles H. Test having received 42 votes, was declared duly elected, and was sworn into office by Judge Dewey.

The House next proceeded to the election of Assistant Secretary, which resulted as follows viz:

William H. Martin was therefore pronounced duly elected, and was sworn into office.

The senate next proceeded to the election of an Enrolling Secretary, when the several balloting resulted as follows, viz:

Mr. V. C. Hanna therefore declared duly elected.

The Senate next proceeded to the election of a doorkeeper, when on the third ballot, James B. Hart, having received a majority of the whole number of votes was declared duly elected.

The Senate then proceeded to ballot for Sergeant at Arms, and on the seventh balloting Geo. W. Moore received a majority of votes, and was pronounced duly elected.

After the adoption of a resolution, on motion of Mr. Sigler, informing the House of Representatives of the organization of the Senate of their readiness to commence legislative business; and also a resolution, on motion of Mr. Vawter, adopting the joint resolutions of last session or the government of the present, the Senate adjourned.

The House proceeded to ballot for Speaker, which resulted as follows:

[After the first ballot Mr. Proffitt declined.] Messrs. Stapp and Hurst were not candidates. Mr. Evans having received a majority of all the votes given, was declared duly elected, and was conducted to the chair by Messrs. Dowling and Vandever, when he made a few very appropriate remarks.

On motion of Mr. Howell, the House proceeded to elect a principal Clerk. Mr. Jehu T. Elliott having received 90 votes, was declared duly elected.

On motion of Mr. Miller, the House proceeded to elect an assistant Clerk. Mr. Armstrong was declared duly elected.

On motion of Mr. Osborne, the House proceeded to elect an Enrolling Clerk. Mr. Winship was declared duly elected.

On motion of Mr. Reeve, the House proceeded to elect a Door Keeper. On first ballot James Fisler received 67, and Peter Winchel 28 votes. Mr. Fisler was declared duly elected.

On motion of Mr. Cunningham the House proceeded to elect a Sergeant-at-Arms. Mr. Rogers was declared duly elected.
