It appears that Mr. Jefferson had previously obtained the mountain rice from Africa--that it succeeded well in the hilly parts of Georgia and Kentucky, but was cultivated only for family use, and could not enter into competition with the rice of the swamps. Dr. W does not give the result of his experiments.
