Super-Battleships of U. S. Navy
WASHINGTON, July 11. (UP)—
The navy's two new 45,000-ton
super-battleships will be named the
Iowa and the New Jersey.
The navy department announced
that President Roosevelt has approved these names for the big
boats—which will be the world's
mightiest fighting craft—along with
those for 21 other warships to be
constructed under the current naval
building program.
One of eight new destroyers under
construction will be called the
U. S. S. Swanson in honor of the
late Secretary of The Navy Claude
A. Swanson who died Friday. Another will bear the name U. S. S
Edison in honor of the assistant
secretary.
Other destroyers will be the Woolsey, the Ludlow, the Ericson, the
Wilkes, the Nicholson, and the Ingraham.
The super-dreadnaughts, which
will be constructed in the New York
and Philadelphia navy yards as
soon as plans are completed, are
expected to cost more than $90,000,000 each. They will mount 16-inch guns and have high-speed and
long-range cruising facilities.
