The Ladies of Providence, There is a difference of opinion among the sterner sex, as to the actual utility of the labors of the ladies of Providence in behalf of the suffering Greeks, and we must candidly confess, that we have had some doubts in relation to the subject. Although the efforts of the Ladies have on all hands, been applauded as praiseworthy, still it has been feared that they would be lost by misapplication on the part of the agents ;but whether this shall prove to be the case or not. no man of gallantry can refrain from bestowing upon the Ladies, a merited encomium, for the good feelings and Christian charities, they have thus far evinced.

But if those who are at all scrupulous in relation to the subject, will but for a moment, witness one of the most interesting spectacles ever presented to the view of man-if he will but behold some two or three hundred ladies, actively employed in manufacturing wearing apparel for suffering humanity, and to lessen the sorrows of the oppressed children of Greece, will no longer harbor a doubt as to the utility of the labors of the ladies of Providence, but on the contrary will extend to them the thanks of a grateful heart, and applaud that nobleness of mind, and benevolence of feeling, which induces them to action.

The Ladies of Providence have done nobly: and have done that which will forever redound to their credit ; and it is believed, that many a suffering Grecian, relieved by their kindnesses and Christian charities, will ascend his thanks to the thrones of Mercy and of Grace, and acknowledge the munificence of the females of our country. Whether our charities are applied with discretion and rightly, or otherwise, the design is good-it is Godlike, and it proves what has been said by an eminent writer, that "woman lovely woman was created for the solace of man ;-that in the hour of distress she is still firm in her attachment, and with renewed energies struggles to lessen the sum of human suffering. In the day of our success, when we rejoice, she too rejoices ; -but when sadness and afflictions surround us she mingles her sympathies with ours, and deplores our misfortunes. If we seek consolation among the busy and happy throngs, she too is there, or if we ascend our prayers to the Most High, at the portals of the temple, she there kneels with us in adoration of the Ruler of the Universe, and is our friend, and companion, in weal and in woe. She is Heaven's best gift to man, and without her, the world were a dreary waste, a howling wilderness, and joy would forever fly from our mansion."
