Jacksonville, April 8.—One of the New York piers of the Clyde Line Steamship Company was destroyed, another slightly damaged and considerable freight destroyed by fire here late today. Because of the high wind it threatened for a time to reach buildings in the vicinity. The origin of the fire is unknown and while there are many wild reports the police are unable to find anyone who can give a clue to its origin. Armed squads from naval vessels in the harbor came ashore and assisted the firemen and police. The fire was put out. The loss is estimated at a hundred and fifty thousand dollars.

Steamer Narrowly Escapes.

Jacksonville, April 8.—Fire of unknown origin completely destroyed one of the New York piers of the Clyde Steamship Company this afternoon entailing a loss of approximately $150,000. The steamer Apache had just pulled out from the pier and the Huron at the next pier had to be hauled into the stream. The fire was fanned by a stiff wind from the river and for a time it looked as if the entire eastern section of the water front would be wiped out. The fire was under control by six o'clock. Armed guards from the U. S. torpedo boats in port were sent ashore to aid the local authorities in keeping the crowds back. Fully 5,000 people watched the fire from nearby points.
