NMA President Says Solution Undemocratic
Mount Morris Park Hospital Is Dedicated
NEW YORK—(ANP)—The plan to establish regional medical schools for Negroes was denounced last week by Dr. J. A. C. Lattimore, president of the National Medical Association, at the annual meeting of the NMA.
The NMA held its business meetings and panel discussions at Wadleigh high, and held clinics and laboratories at seven local hospitals.
Judge Francis E. Rivers of City court welcomed delegates and also gave the dedication address for Mount Morris Park hospital. The NMA presented its 1948 distinguished service medal to Dr. W. G. Alexander of Orange, N. J.
Dr. Lattimore spoke against the regional plan during a panel discussion on the topic, and introduced a resolution against regional medical schools. The board of trustees is scheduled to vote on the subject.
OPPORTUNITIES SEEN
Doctors favoring the plan said that these schools would ease racial tension, and would increase opportunities for training colored physicians.
The NMA president pointed out that this solution would be undemocratic. The aim should be to make facilities available on a non-racial basis. Negroes, as tax paying American citizens are entitled to full use of public facilities, he said.
In connection with the N M A meeting ceremonies for the formal dedication at Mount Morris Park hospital were held. This hospital was recently bought by 94 physicians to serve the Harlem area.
It will be operated on a non-profit basis as a community hospital. Dr. Cecil Marquez is president of the group of doctors. The hospital will open Sept. 15.
