the Catholic Fair in that city have had
manufactured for Mr. Davis:
The head is of 18 karats gold, and
weighs one and half ounces. It is
about two inches in length, one in diameter,
and hexagonal in form. The several
sides are inscribed and ornamented
alternately as follows:
First side-"A relic of the renowned
Merrimac,
Second side-Bay leaf.
Third side-"From the Catholic Fair.
Norfolk, Va., 1866."
Fourth side-Bay leaf.
Fifth side-"The offering of one and
the tribute of many.
Sixth side-Bay leaf.
On the head is the name of Jefferson
Davis, inscribed in circular form, and in
German text, surrounded by chased work
of flowers and leaves. At the base of
the ornamental chasing is a cord sur-
mounted by beautiful frosted work, and
the hole for the tassle is mounted with
gold handsomely carved and ornamented
The ferule at the tip is of heavy brass
and steel. The wood is hazel-hued, well
varnished and polished. It is of perfect
oak, and just three feet in length-which
measure was obtained by one of Mr.
Davis' visitors, without his knowledge
covertly measuring the old walking stick
he used in the fort.
