'We happen to know that when the appointment of Mr. Randolph was in contemplation, a Jackson Senator, who is admitted to be one of the most respectable, intelligent and influential men of the party, remonstrated with the Secretary of State against the folly and danger of the experiment. The Secretary replied that he knew Mr. Randolph was eccentric; but said that the good of the party, and the advantage of conciliating Virginia, required it.'
This declaration attributed to the wily Secretary of State, we fully believe, and for this reason. Every appointment made by this administration has been made through party motives. Capable and high minded citizens have been displaced from office, and their characters aspersed, only to reward partisans. If any one has doubted heretofore the motives which have actuated the administration upon this point, the statement made by Mr. Van Buren, cannot but convince them of the intrigue and corruption of government. Besides, if the people are to be told in broad terms by public servants, that they disregard their good, and are bent exclusively upon the good of the party it is high time for freemen to arouse. It is high time that the voice of patriots should be raised—that the people should teach the administration that they are not above and beyond them, but below them and subject to their will, and that in due time they will receive deserved condemnation.
