The store and gin-house of Mr. John Wright on Edisto Island were destroyed by fire at 1 o'clock on last Wednesday. Fire started in moting room from a colored woman lighting a pipe. Flames spread rapidly; gin house hands barely escaped. Gin house had ten McCarthy gins, corn mill, bolting machine, grain fans, elevators, other machinery, 24 bales sea island cotton, 2,000 bushels sea island cotton seed, all destroyed. Engine house and engine also destroyed. Store had large stock dry goods, groceries, etc., mostly lost except $150 dry goods. 18 bales cotton Mr. Wright's; remaining 6 owned by Major Carl Berlin, G. L. Marsteller, A. Berg, S. L. Baynard, James Hutchinson. Managed by G. Stevens for four years; Wright in New York.
