Full Text

The election of delegates to the Republican State Convention and in the selection of County Committees on Saturday was attended with less friction than was at first thought would be possible, as it was apparent that Mr. Higgins intended to at least capture the latter. Henchmen of the Senator were well drilled in the closely contested wards in Wilmington like the fifth and sixth to carry them by bunching their men. As a result, Senator Higgins got control of 25 out of the 40 delegates of that city, and a majority of the county delegates. The sharpest contest was in the seventh ward where they tried to defeat Levi C. Bird Esq., and Watson R. Sperry, editor of the Morning News, but failed.

The vote in Duck Creek Hundred was a sample of Higgins strength in Kent county, the friends of the latter, who gave their votes for Bernard not carrying but a single hundred, North Murderkill, and that out of compliment to him as a resident of it. This gave Richardson 38 out of the 40 votes.

There was no special choice between the candidates for the head of the ticket only as they represented party principle on the one side and personal politics on the other.

In Sussex county there was contest in only five of the hundreds, delegates being elected favorable to Kent's choice, the presumption being that it would be Richardson. Henry P. Cannon of Bridgeville was chosen as their candidate for Congress.
