FOURTEEN FAIR DAUGHTERS OF AMERICA ON THEIR TRAVELS THROUGH EUROPE AND THE ORIENT - PHOTOGRAPHED WITH AN EMPEROR-DELIGHTFUL AND INSTRUCTIVE WANDERINGS.
From the New York Herald,
ALEXANDRIA, Egypt, Nov. 23, 1871,
A novelty among American travelers abroad will induce the derision of the reader, because the American is himself a novelty to foreigners, notwithstanding he has been on exhibition for nearly a century. But what shall be said of a party of fourteen young ladies, traveling over Europe, Asia, and Africa, matronized by a lady instructor, in order that they may learn from the great book of human life? Being in Milan some two weeks ago, I had an opportunity to observe an itinerant seminary, composed of more than a dozen of the fairest of our American girls, in charge of Mrs. Stone. The young ladies varied in age from fourteen to twenty-one, and represented every quarter of the Union typifying all shades of innocent beauty.
THEIR NAMES are as follows: Miss Nancy N. Sanborn, Miss Erina M. Fuller, Miss Emma Ethridge, Miss Caroline C. Bertsch, Miss Lizzie Bell Fuller, Miss Nancy A. Sanborn, Miss Gertrude Thomas, Miss Flora Bell Van Huyzan, Miss Kate E. Mitchell, Miss Lena M. Gould, Miss Clara A. Avery, Miss Kittie C. Baxter, Miss Mary T. McNaughton, Miss Lucinda B. Stone, of Kalamazoo.
THIS PARTY left New York nearly a year ago, under the direct supervision of Mrs. Stone, but for male protection they have Mr. H. G. Gilbert and a courier, who attend to all the details of traveling. They first made a tour through Ireland, where they were greeted with the generous hospitality which only an Irishman can offer, and then passing through Scotland visited England, France, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy. Of course such an aggregation of young and attractive girls, blushing with health and vitality, attracts the curious gaze of the ASTONISHED EUROPEAN, who can little understand why a young lady should have anything beyond a shallow property in music and domestic accomplishment. Still, it touches a new system for educating the American young lady, and one which, from the results already achieved, is worthy of the largest commendation. It is simply taking the undeveloped girl from the close and deleterious airs of the school room and acclimatizing her to the healthy air of Ireland, or the hot, feverish weather of Africa.
EDUCATION A LA MODE.
With her history and guide book at her elbow, she visits the very scenes described in Roman history: she climbs the Alps; wanders in solitudes which her favorite poets have immortalized, and by turns becomes gay at the carousels of great capitals, and serious and thoughtful in the stately palaces and imposing cathedrals: The most famous ruins, the grandest living works of art and great natural wonders move before her young, appreciative eye. She beholds and admires. She is a true traveler because she has not come abroad when her taste has become neglected by age, or her appreciation chilled by domestic ties. She moves in the poetry of travel and without that girlish instinct her ideas must very much resemble those of Mr. Twain. I have rarely, I might say never, seen a collection of SUCH FRESH LOOKING GIRLS as compose this party. They all enjoy their long excursion, and do not fatigue by travel. Now it is Venice for a week, then Venice and Milan. Landmarks famous in literature, churches and scenery that are in the knowledge only of those of special culture are carefully visited, and the good Madame takes care that the young ladies do not leave without ample instruction. Thus it is that they learn- what can never be forgotten-impressions which will serve them to become accomplished women in the drawing room. Why should not the system become popular? It has certainly a good effect on society and is not a very expensive system of instruction.
RECEIVED BY THE EMPEROR OF BRAZIL.
The young ladies have been overwhelmed with pleasant adventures. Upon arriving in Egypt they met the Emperor of Brazil, and, expressing to his Majesty their desire to have his autograph, the transatlantic sovereign immediately sent for the entire party and spoke a few pleasant words to each, at the same time presenting his photograph, duly indorsed. By a strange fatality, when the young ladies VISITED THE PYRAMIDS a photographer was employed in taking a negative of Don Pedro, with the mammoth mausoleums in the background. The seminary was consequently taken at the same time, and the emperor declared that he could wish nothing to remain immortal except a picture which had fired him in the company of such a charming circle-not even the pyramids themselves. Whereupon the acquaintance was renewed, and each young lady was declared a natural princess. A week ago, the party, conducted by a dragoman, sailed from the port for Beyrout, where they will go overland to visit the Saviour's tomb. While at Cairo they received distinguished courtesies from Consul General Butler. At this time one might think it dangerous to move recklessly around the Levant, when cholera is spreading and quarantines are established in nearly every harbor, yet the young ladies go everywhere, and there is rarely no danger.
GOING TO CONSTANTINOPLE.
If the sanitary condition of Constantinople permits they will visit the capital of the Turkish empire; thence going up the Danube, will complete their view of Europe. It is safe to say that no party that has ever been abroad has made a better impression than this family of pretty American misses.
