Hope Held That Korean Truce Deadlock Will Be Broken
TOKYO, Aug. 15—(P)—The Communists are studying a new western proposal for breaking the Korean truce deadlock and speeding up negotiations. There may be some reaction when the negotiations resume at 11 o'clock tonight, EDT.
Vice Admiral Turner Joy suggested that a subcommittee take up the matter of where a truce line is to be established. The issue has deadlocked the talks for some time. The Communists are said to have shown considerable interest, and they asked for a copy of Admiral Joy's proposal for detailed study.
If the truce line goes to a subcommittee, the full negotiations teams might move on to another item on the agenda. The Allies have suggested several times that the negotiators pass up the issue of the truce line for the moment, and go on to something else.
The Reds are insisting on a truce along the 38th parallel, the old north-south dividing line in Korea. The Allies are insisting on a truce based on the present battle lines.
