ST. JOHN'S LUTHERAN CHURCH.

Interesting Old Church--Many of the Citizens of this Community Come From That Congregation.

On the 24th of November St. John's Lutheran church on Broad river near Hope Station celebrated the centennial of the building of the church. It is one of the oldest churches in this section and the congregation is older than the present building. It is on the Lexington side but so near the Newberry line that a great many of the members of the congregation live on the Newberry side. In addition to that it is interesting to Newberry people in that many of the prominent families in this community come from that section and either themselves were confirmed in old St. John's or their parents before them were.

It is a plain wooden building and stands in a grove of magnificent original forest oaks and hickories, and in connection with the church the congregation owns a very valuable tract of land. The old church at one time, as has been stated in The Herald and News, had a second story pulpit with a sounding board above. That has been taken down, however, and a modern pulpit and altar railing substituted and the sounding board removed. In fact the sounding board from this church is now in the museum in Newberry college, as one of the relics of former days.

The celebration of the centennial was an event of great interest to the people of that community and a large crowd was present to hear the addresses which were made, and enjoy the picnic dinner which was served by these good Dutch Fork people. The congregation at present is served by Rev. E. J. Sox as pastor.

The Herald and News has already published an account of this centennial celebration and also made mention of the interesting history connected with this old church. We take pleasure in presenting in this connection a cut of the church made from a recent photograph.

Dr. O. B. Mayer, Sr., father of Dr. Mayer, of Newberry, worshipped in this church in the long ago, and the Summer Brothers in Newberry, most of them, were confirmed in this church. The older Houseals were also members of this congregation. It is, therefore, a church and a congregation possessing a personal interest to many of the people of this community.
