FOR THE STAR.

The following remarks occur in a late number of a professed religious newspaper printed in Boston, and called the "Christian Soldier." In speaking of a "Protestant Association" in New York, the Editor observes, that "ever since its formation, it has held stated meetings; for the purpose of discussing the abominations of Popery, and opening the eyes of the community to the movements of the "Beast"! The said Association, it seems, recommend to the Protestant churches throughout the country, to form similar associations, and to all Protestant Clergymen to "stir up" the community against the Catholics.

Now all this is in the very spirit of Antichrist--and moreover, it is exceedingly impolitic; for nothing in the world would so much tend to exalt any particular sect in this country, as a general "stir up" among the clergy to put it down.

The abusive epithet of the "beast"-- abusive, I mean by its exclusive application to the Catholic church--is as offensive to good taste as it is opposite to the spirit of christianity. From the whole tenor of the New Testament it is evident that this and similar epithets, were applied by the sacred writers to Spiritual Tyranny, and Spiritual Tyrants, wherever found;--that they are just as applicable to the Political Bishops of Old England, or to the persecuting Puritans of New England--or the persecuting Anabaptists of Germany, as to the Bishops of Rome, or to the Catholic Church.
These Protestants would be much more religiously employed in "discussing" with themselves, the "abominations" of their own hearts, and praying God to "open their eyes" to their own infirmities, than in bandying abusive epithets, and in "stirring up" communities which have always enough of the Antichristian leaven of sectarianism, to "stir up" quite as much fermentation as is useful.

A PROTESTANT.
