The Door of the Belmont Mull Safe Damaged.
Night before last a bold attempt was made to rob the safe in the office of the Belmont Nail Company, in South Wheeling. It seems that some person had conceived the idea that the safe contained money, and in order to get at it endeavored to blow open the door with powder. The safe has two doors, an inner and an outer one, and through the outside plate of the first door and just to the right of the lock, a hole about half an inch in diameter had been drilled and powder poured into the space between the two plates composing the door. A number of smaller holes had been drilled near the bottom. The discharge only loosened the inside plate, leaving the door as securely locked as it was before. The company would rather have left the key in the lock, as the money the thieves would have found had they succeeded in opening it, would not pay for the damage done.
