On Saturday last, in the Senate of this state, Mr. Clinton moved the following highly laudable resolution:
Whereas it appears from a report of a committee of the Senate made at the last session of the Legislature, that Ebenezer Purdy, a Senator from the Southern District, was bribed to vote in favor of the act to incorporate the Merchants' Bank, and that he attempted to bribe Stephen Thorn, a Senator from the Eastern District, and Obadiah German, a Member of the Assembly from the county of Chenango, to vote in favor of the said act: and whereas it is essential to the honor of the state that our public councils should not be disgraced by a man guilty of such corrupt conduct—Therefore
Resolved, That the said Ebenezer Purdy be and he is hereby expelled from the Senate.
Thereupon—
Ordered, That Stephen Thorn and Obadiah German do attend this House on Tuesday next, and until their further attendance is dispensed with by the Senate, in order to be re-examined respecting the above accusation, if deemed necessary, and that the clerk notify them accordingly.
Ordered, That the clerk serve copies of the preceding notice and order on Mr. Purdy.
