ILGWU To Have Political Shop Stewards Too

Unity House, Pa. (LPA)—In the closing sessions of its quarterly meeting last week, the executive board of the Int'l Ladies Garment Workers Union-AFL, approved a plan designed to increase the union's political effectiveness.

Drafted by ILGWU political action department director Gus Tyler, the plan calls for the selection of political action shop stewards in each of the thousands of ILGWU-organized garment shops.

President David Dubinsky and other ILGWU leaders made it clear that the political stewards are not to be "political commissars."

Their main task will be to enlist the energies of union members in support of labor's political aims.

They'll keep Congressmen and state legislatures posted on labor's demands, as well as mobilize union members for electoral action

Tyler said that the ILGWU is starting work this year on the campaign to elect a Fair Deal Congress in 1950. ILGWU members throughout the country, he declared, have pledged "unceasing warfare" against the Dixiegop coalition which has scuttled much of President Truman's program.

The already heavy load of work that the union's regular shop stewards and shop chairmen carry makes it necessary to create the new posts if the union is to make its full weight felt in politics, the executive board members declared.
