Event Details
Congress has nearly completed general arrangements for the Western Territory. Commissioners appointed to treat with Indians, settle general peace, and procure by purchase or otherwise a tract of land extending westward to the great Miami river, sufficient to compose several states. Negotiation to occur next summer. Commissioners to meet at New York on the 10th instant to adjust steps for the treaty. Not to be too sanguine about treasure, but land's fertility and navigable waters promise immense wealth when cultivated. May lessen public debt with prudent management. On March 10, Congress had not entered principles for opening a land-office or disposing of land, but likely securities will be accepted in payment.
