Full Text

The new school law does not expedite the collection of scholastic reports from the county judges. The imperfection of statistical information relating to schools in this state has long been complained of; and as it arose largely through delinquencies of officers who were charged with making reports, it was hoped the new school law would remedy the trouble, but the state superintendent of education does not find it so. Teachers who fail to make proper reports, and assessors who neglect to take the scholastic census as required, may have a part of their compensation deducted for the omission, but no penalty is attached to the county judge who fails in sending these reports to headquarters. Information lodged in his hands does not do the state any good as long as it is kept out of the reports. The same penalty for delinquency or neglect should be attached to county judges as to teachers and assessors.
