Population by Counties.
A bulletin has been prepared under the direction of William C. Hunt, chief statistician for population, from which the following information regarding Arizona is taken.
In 1860 Arizona constituted the county of Arizona, in the territory of New Mexico, and had a population of 6,482. On February 24, 1863 it was organized as the territory of Arizona. The population as shown by the four succeeding censuses was, in 1870, 7,658; 1880, 40,440; 1890, 59,620; 1900, 122,212. The increase in the last ten years was 105.9 per cent; in the preceding ten years it was 47.4 per cent.
The population figures include the Indians on reservations who, in 1880, numbered 28,469, and who, with 104 other persons on reservations, were, in 1890, specially enumerated and not counted in the general population census. Adding them to the figures of 1890 the actual population in that year was 88,243. This shows an actual increase in all of 33,969. The population of 1900 is twelve times as large as that of 1870, the first census taken after the first territorial organization.
The approximate area of the territory is 112,920 square miles. The average number of persons to the square mile in 1890 being 0.5 and in 1900 1.0.
Coconino, Navajo and Santa Cruz counties have been created since 1890.
