Prowlers Routed Near Birch Home

A gardener, spotting two prowlers near the Spring Bay home of Attorney and Mrs. Everett Birch Thursday night, frightened them away with a shot from a .22 caliber rifle, police reported.

The gardener, Joseph LaPlace, told police he saw two men, one armed with a knife, near the north side home. He said they were dressed in brown shirts and trousers and one had a peaked cap on backwards.

An officer arriving on the scene found no trace of the prowlers.

The police blotter noted that an investigation will be made to determine if the rifle is registered.
