SPECIALIZED TRAINING FOR PEOPLE.
Realizing the great economic value which will result from developing the full capabilities of each individual, the federal government has widened the scope of its activities along educational lines and is manifesting a great interest in the vocational training of workers in the various commercial classifications. A recent bulletin issued by the department of the interior describes the methods of special training for sales-women in department stores of Boston, New York, Washington, and other cities. The purpose of the course is to better the economic condition of the girls through making them efficient sales-women and giving them worth standards. The advantages have been so pronounced that the course is now recognized by the government, and plans are being made to extend it to other lines. While several manufacturers of highly specialized products have conducted training schools for their salesmen, the idea of giving scientific training to clerks in retail trade is comparatively new, but the success which has attended it proves it to be one of the important steps in the preparation of America for its coming supremacy of the world.
