MISCELLANEOUS REPOSITORY.
The Cottager's Daughter.
Oh tell me you swains, have you seen
my Pastora,
Have you seen the sweet nymph pass this
way
Transcendent as Venus, as blithe as Aurora,
From Neptune's bed rising to hail the new
day.
Forlorn do I wander, long time have I
sought her,
The fairest, the rarest forever my theme;
She's a goddess in form, tho' a cottager's
daughter,
That dwells on the borders of Allen's wind-
ing stream.
The lordlings so gay, and young squires
have sought her,
To link her fair hand in the conjugal chain,
But devoid of ambition is the cottager's
daughter,
Convinc'd them their offers and flattery
was vain.
Then why thus alone does she leave me to
languish
Pastora to splendor could ne'er yield her
hand.
But no, she returns to remove my fond an-
guish,
O'er her heart, love and truth, I still can
command,
Then grant me ye gods to my wife, my
Pastora;
The cottager's daughter shall still be my
theme
Then give me kind Hymen to wife my
Pastora,
That dwells on the borders of Allen's wind-
ing stream.
