Full Text

A writer under the signature of a citizen in the American Daily Advertiser, and transcribed to be sure into the Aurora, threatens a series of numbers in which he promises to expose Mr. Secretary Pickering's reasoning in the late important communication. The menace of jacobinism we have long learned to despise, whether it appear in the unwarrantable licentiousness of a foreign minister: notes, or in the very equivocal dress of Frenchify'd citizenship. If this hone citizen go on as he has begun we shall be under new obligations to his employers: he attempts to ridicule the Secretary, (and of course the President) because he has relied upon that exposition to the motives of the old French cabinet, which that cabinet gave to the world, and which the late French committee repeated as a mark of the detestation due that very cabinet—He vindicates the French cabinet from the charge of selfishness, by proving that they were too profligate to be credited. To destroy their sincerity in evil and sinister motives, he pledges himself to their insincerity and total indifference to truth—this is a precious vindication. This species of morality in the very front of the attack on the President sets every mind at ease—ingenuity thus employed will never do mischief. The bosom of every man (who is not a Philosopher) is against such an examiner.
