Full Text

All doubt is now vanished on the question, What course the British will adopt respecting British seamen found on board foreign vessels.—They expressly disavow any right to search for them on board National Ships: But are determined to seize them whenever found on board Merchantmen. The point is now ascertained, as it respects the United States and Great Britain. One or both must recede. Our government, it is said, has fixed it as a sine qua non, that the American flag, on board merchantmen, shall protect even British subjects sailing under it. The British government has proclaimed their determination to take their native born seamen and mariners whenever they find them on board foreign merchantmen.

The two nations are thus at issue.— And six weeks will not elapse before it will be seen, whether, or not, our Rulers are such "madcaps"—to use the phrase of a New York democratic paper—to go to War for the protection of foreign seamen.—Cent.
