Full Text

Cardinal de Cheverus believed in winning sinners back to God by love rather than by terrorism. Hence all of his sermons were of the beauties of virtue and the exceeding joy that was in store for repentant mortals.

On one occasion, he was reluctantly persuaded to preach, in the Cathedral of Tours, on the subject of hell. He stood before the congregation, read a text appropriate to his theme, surveyed the vast throng for an eager instant, then burst into tears and left the pulpit without uttering a syllable. Having been importuned afterward to explain this extraordinary conduct, he declared that as his eyes wandered over that immense concourse of human beings, many of whom were so soon to leave this world, the thought struck him of the possibility of a single soul being lost forever, and the thought so overpowered him with sorrow that his tongue could not utter a word of denunciation.

What a tender heart! What an angelic spirit! Was there ever a more eloquent sermon?
