Celebrating Social Security Week

Sunday, August 14th, was the kickoff for the observance of Social Security Week, in that this week will be one of the important memorial events of our governmental systems aimed at bringing the benefits of government closer to the people.

In celebration of the 20th anniversary of the signing of the Social Security legislation by the late President Franklin D. Roosevelt, there was wide acclaim all over the nation at the sound approach of something that had been classified as being in the wild dreamers class. The long-talked event was occasionally laughed off, but step by step the nation became social-minded and eye-singled to the cause of comfort for every American regardless of his race or creed.

Enacted into the law, Social Security for a while was merely talk and passed off as an ordinary alphabetical agency.

But today the Social Security measure has become of age; it stands high in the life of every community and hardly there is a town or country hamlet but what that little blue check does not find its way to the doors of the needy.

Accruing from mere pittances taken from the payroll check, it has grown to a mighty distributing agency, coming into the lives of those who otherwise could not afford to quit work in old age.

Many social minded ones had longed to see something like compensation come into the lives of many of the older people who spent some of their days in slavery without remuneration.

In every community want in a large measure has been dispelled, the aged and the sick are able to handle money and it is with pride that there is a spirit of independence among those who otherwise might be in dire need and want.

Social Security has enabled our people to pay their lodge dues; insurance premiums, church tithes and then live like people.

Man was never intended for the slums, the gutters and the places allotted animals. Being made in the image of a Holy Deity: man's place is on the lofty level of humanity.

Thanks to the forward minded legislators and those public spirited citizens who helped to bring about this long-needed beneficial agency that is filling such a gap in our human society that no other measure could fill.

Fellow citizens, make the most of Social Security Week, among the greatest weeks of them all.
