Full Text

They write from Paris, That the Count de Maurepas daily expects necessary Instructions from the Sieur de la Croix, Author of the Six Compasses, for the Discovery of the Longitude, in order to the making Experiments in different Places. This Author, as well as the Geographers, suppose two Poles, one Equator, and Magnetick Circles of Latitude; the Compasses, which he calls Compasses of Inclination, and whose Needles move in the vertical Plain, give to each of his Latitudes a particular Inclination, which he makes use of to find the Position of the North Magnetick Pole, as well in Longitude as Latitude, and afterwards the Inclinations to each Degree of these Latitudes. To find the Longitude, he forms a spherical Triangle, the Sides of which are the Distance of this Latitude to the Pole of the World, which being known, makes it easy to discover in what Part of the World one is.

The Count de Maurepas daily expects necessary instructions from the Sieur de la Croix, author of the Six Compasses, for the discovery of the longitude in order to make experiments in different places. This author, as well as the geographers, suppose two poles, one equator, and magnetick circles of latitude. The compasses, called compasses of inclination with needles moving in the vertical plain, give each latitude a particular inclination used to find the position of the North Magnetick Pole in longitude and latitude, and inclinations to each degree of these latitudes. To find the longitude, he forms a spherical triangle with sides including the distance of this latitude to the pole of the world, making it easy to discover one's part of the world.
