State big game manager Fletcher Newby disclosed this week that "the Montana Fish and Game Department has made a determined effort to maintain uniformity of deer season opening dates for the 1960 season"
This was done, Newby explained, to reduce the congestion of hunters in local areas. Out of 97 deer hunting areas, 83 will open October 16. Of the 14 remaining areas, some will have an early opening date in September to give sportsmen an opportunity to hunt in mild fall weather and also because of the inaccessibility of some of these areas during later months.
A few additional areas will open earlier than October 16 to direct extra hunting pressure into areas where range or agricultural problems exist. A very few areas will open later than October 16 because of lower deer populations and special management needs, Newby said.
However, over 85 percent of the 97 deer areas will have the October 16 opening date.
The fish and game commission will set the final opening dates and hunting area boundaries for all game species at its meeting March 14 and 15.
