BIG TURN-OUT FOR BASEBALL

Coach Optimistic; Prospects Bright For Another State Championship Team In Spite Of The Loss Of Six Players

One of the largest number of candidates in the history of local high baseball teams turned out for drills last Thursday when 66 youngsters showed up to start the old baseball pill a-rolling at Simmons Park.

Coach Hoyle's boys, 1932 state champions, are optimistic over the coming season, only a few days off, as McNeill, J. Womble, F. Sullivan, Harrison, Matthews, and Burnette were the only men lost by the sheepskin route last season, and locals still have a chance of copping the state crown again as plenty of reserve strength is available, altho the hurling staff will be somewhat crippled with Starke and Acree only regulars back and prospects not so bright in the rookies hurling staff. but Yates Brown and Tom Taylor are working hard to do mound duty for the Jackets, with Hale as another possible prospect.

Two diamonds are being used. Hoyle and assistant Coach Poyner have twenty-seven Jacks drilling on Simmons field while the other candidates are being handled by Tom Cheek on the old high school field.

The Jackets Varsity outfit has Pridgen, Sullivan, and C. Edmonds working behind the home plate; Garris and Newton around the first sack; Allsbrook, Moore, and Outland, second base; I. Dickens, Nickolson, and Butler at shortstop; Capt. Grant, McNeil, and Speight on the "hot corner"; J. Taylor, W. Dickens, Hardison, Byrd, Vincent, Sherian, Whitby, and C. Mills in the outfield.

The Junior Jackets outfit are increasing in number rapidly and will challenge the varsity for a game in a few days.

Those reporting to Cheek include: Sanford West, Daniel Cagle, J. H. Kennemyer, Hugh Buggs. E. Mosley, Punk Spender, Buddy Edmondson, E. George, I. Byrd, J. Blanton, G. Edmondson, J. Lassiter, P. C. Lewter, Starke. H. Garris, P. Moore, Sam Smith, P. Beckwith. W. Garner, C. Boyd, R. Sledge, R. Maye, R. Pridgen, P. Allen, Buck Grissom, B. Cooper, F. Wood, M. Moore, J. Wrenn, T. Lowe, G. Nethercutt, Eugene Shell, William Gaylord, Joe McCommons. Milton Bennett, Raymond Edmondson, Jimmy Jarman, Jimmy Joyner, Jack Smith.

Shelly Edwards is manager of the Junior team.
