A DIALOGUE between Louis XV. and Echo.

Translated from the French.

ANSWER me, sweet Echo, 'tis Louis doth speak? Speak.

Tell me what State my Finance is reduc'd to? Fut o.

What Demon against me has rais'd all this War? English Tar.

Where then is my Fleet that should them have subdu'd? Mew'd.

Of my vast Colonies what now is the Fortune? Forts taken.

What Place shall at least be at Britain's Beck? Quebec.

Where are all my Trade Ships that on the Ocean did sail? At Sale.

What have they done with the brave Mariners? Prisoners.

What are the Exploits of the Marshal Contades? Redomontades.

My Army under him--pray, what's become of it? Discomfits.

Who has dar'd to fix on them so shameful a Brand? Ferdinand.

Should I not still try th' Effect of a Descent? A Feint.

Of so fine an Equipment.-- the future Success? Luckless.

What Name shall I bear in this critical Age? A Sage.

Where then is my Council--so wise and wary once? At Variance.

How acts my Parliament in so rueful a State? Remonstrate.

If they teaze me yet more, how shall I them punish? Banish.

From all my Vexations what will give me Ease? Peace.

And cure the Heart-Burnings that rankle the French? A Carte Blanche.
