Full Text
The democrats are peculiarly unfortunate in the recruits they have occasionally made from the ranks of Federalism, Take Massachusetts, for instance. Bidwell is said to have been a federalist. He deserted to democracy, and he turned out to be a rogue. Either his roguery made him desert, and leave a party where he found his disposition would meet with no encouragement; or else mixing with democracy corrupted him. His friends of that denomination may choose which branch of the alternative they please. Mr. Gannett, the member of Congress from the district of Maine, is said to have been once a federalist, also. If so he has shewn himself to be no better proof against the contamination of democracy than Mr. Bidwell. We should advise the Democrats of Massachusetts to keep a good eye on some distinguished characters in their ranks at the present time, who have changed sides, lest they prove to be no better than--they should be. The temptations of power and profit are strong; but they cannot seduce real Federalists, that is, HONEST Men. Whenever, therefore, a case of desertion occurs, let the democrats look to it-the chances are much in favour of their either catching a tartar in the first place, or making one in the second.--Conn.
