Extract of a letter from Grenville, May 25.
'Saturday last I returned from a tour which I made last week through the interior parts of Vermont. I think the face of this country (in some places) wears evident marks of a very great change. At Lancaster on Otter Creek is a small hillock containing about four acres, and perhaps 25 feet higher than the surrounding interval. Mr. --- an eminent farmer, built a house on this hill (it being a commanding eminence) and upon digging a well 43 feet deep, he came to the hearts of two pine trees, which he cut off at each side and drew out. After digging four feet further he came upon a large pine stump; upon which he left off digging and has since proceeded no further.'
