Event Details
Two men, Samuel Fletcher and William Hoyle, were bathing in the Irwell near Hodgenlane, Salford, with a large young dog. The dog jumped in, played with Hoyle on an island, then held him underwater. Fletcher tried to help but the dog turned on him. William Ullan assisted, secured the dog, but Hoyle sank and was recovered dead after half an hour. Inquest held Tuesday week before Mr. Rutter; dog belonged to Fletcher's brother, powerful but not vicious.
