Full Text
On Monday evening last, a German laborer, was attacked at the Tunnel near Hedgesville, by a laborer, named Timothy McCarty, and so severely beaten as to put his life in great jeopardy, his jaw and neck being shockingly lacerated, by a blow from a shovel. On Tuesday, a constable, was sent for to arrest McCarty, but was plainly given to understand by the fellow laborers, that his force was insufficient. On Tuesday night, a party of armed men, went in aid of the civil authority; but, after a diligent examination of the lodgings of T. McCarty, and all of the suspected shantees in the neighborhood, were unable to find him.
Two laborers were taken upon a charge of resisting the arrest, the evidence being insufficient to authorize their detention, they were discharged.—Martinsburg Gazette.
