At a Special Meeting

One of the most significant events of this year has been the docking here of the Aleutian Queen owned by Homer Kyros and Melvin Leonard both well known here and veterans of the war.

Loaded with a general cargo from Prince Rupert which had been shipped from the states to that point. she tied up at the San Juan dock with cargo intact and checking out to the last article.

Under charter to Fred Howard the Aleutian Queen was loaded with concrete pipe for use in the completion of the Veteran's Housing Project along with other supplies and material.

Included was between five and six thousand cases of Ruby Beer.

This beer is brewed in Chicago by the Ruby people who have been at it since 1886. It is said they leased the plant to Al Capone during prohibition.

The "Queen's" capacity is 350 tons being of about the same size as Heinie Berger's "Garland".

Formerly an FS ship she is now equipped for 'sharp' freeze and the owners plan to bring in 150 tons of salmon. have them boxed and stored at the Howard Cold Storage plant and return to the fishing grounds in the Cordova area for sufficient fish to finish out a capacity load. whereupon they expect to leave for southern ports to dispose of the salmon.

The first trip will be made in July and the second is planned in August.

While they did not say so they might very likely be interested in a back haul on both trips.

They did state. however. that they are available for charter and are interested in making regular trips to Prince Rupert throughout the year except during fishing season.

Being equipped as they are for cold storage they should be able to supply the town with first class service in regard to green goods as well as general merchandise and the item of pilferage and damage being unknown should be sufficient to bring down prices locally.

The fact that shipments may now be made inbond from the eastern and middle states to Prince Rupert and a straight haul direct to Seward should set local and Anchorage men to thinking especially with a minimum of handling and a strike by Longshoremen looming in the offing.
