The Impeachment of Governor Holden—Ben Butler Retained as Counsel for the Governor.
RALEIGH, Dec. 17, 1870
The Judiciary Committee of the House have been in almost continuous session since Thursday framing articles of impeachment against Governor Holden, but have not yet completed them. They will probably be submitted on Monday, when the Senate will arraign the Governor, from which time his executive functions cease. The trial will not commence until after the Christmas recess.
It is rumored here to-night that General B. F. Butler, the famous impeacher, will come down to defend Holden, who finds it difficult to obtain an efficient corps of counsel among the members of the bar belonging to his party. The Governor was impeached on Wednesday, professed religion on Friday, and quite a sensation is created this evening by the announcement that he will be publicly baptized to-morrow in the Baptist church of this city.
