Militia.—From the official returns made to the government, of the militia of the United States in 1823, the total is given as 1,053,787, and the number of muskets distributed among them in the various states amounted to 15,000.

The returns from all the states were not made up to the year 1823. Those from Delaware are only to 1814, those from Maryland 1811, S. Carolina 1820, Georgia 1816, Louisiana 1820. Mississippi 1812, &c. Complete returns from all the states to the present period would probably swell the total to one million and a half of effective men.
