Serious surgery patient is okay

An operation described by some hospital workers as "the biggest ever performed here" was done on a middle-aged patient in the prison hospital Wednesday.

The "bigness" of the operation lay primarily, according to nurse Mary Anderson, in the high risk which attends operations of its type.

The surgery was necessary to correct a block in the great artery the aorta, a condition known medically as Leriche's syndrome, resident surgeon Veloso, who performed the operation, said.

Over five and a half hours were taken for the surgery and anesthesia, Dr. Veloso reports.

Ten men of the population gave blood in preparation for the operation, but it proved necessary to use only two pints.

Surgeon Veloso indicated that the patient is now doing well and is expected to fully recover.
