Full Text
A writer in the last week's Boston paper says, "The present commercial restrictions which Great-Britain has imposed upon her colonies in America, we esteem injurious to our trade, and they undoubtedly are so; but whether we have adopted the most advisable and prudent method to remove these obstructions is extremely problematical. Certain it is, that if the measures we have adopted do not effect a removal, they are by no means calculated to remedy the loss we sustain by those obstructions. It would certainly be miserable policy in a trader, whose existence as such depended upon the sale of his goods, to refuse to dispose of them when a beneficial offer presented, because he could not have the privilege of transporting them to his purchaser, when it was more convenient for the purchaser, perhaps, to transport them himself, Equally absurd it is for us, when, by the operation of the British navigation act, we are deprived of those advantages of freight and transport of our commodities to the West-India and other markets, which we formerly enjoyed, to deprive ourselves therefore of our only remaining advantage, a beneficial sale of those commodities on our own shores."
