Rushed by plane and train from a southwest Pacific combat zone to 'Frisco and across the continent, Pfc. Stephen Zeiba, one of Putnam's few Pearl Harbor veterans, arrived in this city and at the bedside of his seriously-ill mother. Mrs. Ethel M. Zeiba of 25 Milton street, early Monday on a 30-day emergency furlough obtained through intervention of Putnam Chapter, American Red Cross. with military authorities. He was joined at the family home by his wife, the former Anne Constantine of Moosup.
The mother's illness reaching a highly serious stage, it was brought to the attention of Mrs. Albert E. Otto. head of the local Red Cross home service committee, who also was informed of the ill woman's desire to see her boy. Through emergency efforts, Pfc. Zeiba was located, his commanding officer contacted, and the emergency furlough obtained.
