DEMPSEY BOXES
4 FAST ROUNDS
AND PLAYS BALL

(By The Associated Press.)

Atlantic City, N. J., May 21.-
Jack Dempsey finished his first
week of training today in prepara-
tion for the world's championship
contest with Georges Carpentier
July 2 with the shortest workout
he has indulged in since he started
his grind six days ago.

The heavyweight
champion
worked in his indoor arena a little
more than half an hour, stepping
four rounds with the gloves and
punching the bag and sandbag for
four rounds. He finished with
some gymnastic exercises. Jack
Clifford, who boxed the last two
rounds with Dempsey, was bleeding
from the mouth before the first
round was finished.

Several women and quite a few
children were in the camp and
there was a gasp from the women
when Dempsey sent Clifford half-
way across the ring and reeling to
the ropes with a left hook to the
chin. After Dempsey finished he
spent a few minutes playing with
the children.

Dempsey played the usual game
of baseball with newspaper men
and camp followers today. He
played first base part of the game
and pitched two innings.

The outdoor arena was dedicat-
ed tonight with five eight-round
contests.

The champion was a
spectator.

Lawrence O'Neill, lord mayor of
Dublin, visited the champion's
training camp tonight. He told the
champion Ireland was much in-
terested in his success. He pre-
sented Dempsey with an em-
broidered forget-me-not which, he
said, was given to him for this pur-
pose by an old lady in Ireland.
Dempsey promised to wear it
under his belt when he faces Car-
pentier.
