COMMUNICATION.

In order further to gratify the vindictive spirit with which the Federal Republicans are pursued, a petition has been presented to the Legislature of Pennsylvania, praying an alteration of the charter of the city, for the sole purpose of enabling the members of the Common Council to remove, by a joint vote, the present Treasurer of the Corporation of Philadelphia. A bill has accordingly been read in the House of Representatives for annulling the injunctions of a concurrent vote, and directing that the Treasurer shall hereafter be elected by a joint vote!

I am confident the Representatives of the people of Pennsylvania will not give their said to this measure, when they are acquainted with the motives which induced the application. The present Treasurer was an officer of our army from the commencement to the termination of the late war; he had his horse shot under him, and was himself wounded, in the service of his country; and he has faithfully discharged the duties of the office which he now holds. Why then is he to be removed? Is it because he does not--cannot--conform to the political creed of those who now compose the Common Council of Philadelphia? It is. No other reason can be assigned. All good men should unite in the endeavour to discountenance, and to check, this abominable persecution. It is disgraceful to our State: while we boast of liberty, and talk of toleration, those who dare to exercise the right of suffrage according to their consciences, are either branded with odious epithets, or are punished with the loss of office.

Main Argument

the pennsylvania legislature should reject the bill to remove philadelphia's treasurer by joint vote, as it is motivated by political persecution against federal republicans rather than any fault in his service, which included faithful duty and wounds in the late war.
