Mariner Troop News Girl Scout Week

Marathon Ship 65, a Mariner Troop of Girl Scouts, recently received its official Council Certificate for the current year, listing the leaders, Mrs. Juanita Campbell, Miss Ann B. Wetherby and Mrs. Mary E. Mason, the troop committee, Mesdames Ella Graham and Nell Troup, and the girls who comprise the Mariners, Beverly Burns, Berenice DeSanchez, Lisa Bobbie Erpelding, Betty Greenman, Carol Killgore, Jean Ann Kugler, Beth Kunitz, Julie Mercer, Rose Ann Staisel, Doreen Rabito, Carolyn Rackley, Penny Soumer, Rose Ann McCook, Marsha Steadham and Tenzy Zet.

Election of officers took place in February. Betty Greenman is Boatswain, Bobbie Erpelding Coxswain, Carolyn Rackley Yeoman and Doreen Rabito Purser. Appointment of additional officers will take place at the meeting of the troop scheduled for tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 o'clock at Marathon High School.

Last Saturday the girls enjoyed an outdoor "gam" at Marathon Yacht Club, when they picnicked, swam and had their first lesson in water skiing, consisting of practicing putting on the skis. They also learned to row, with Gil Spence, Sr. as instructor, and they also practiced capsizing a boat, bringing it to drydock swamped and then bailing it out.

Mrs. Troup, committee member of the troop, donated the weiners for the outdoor roast, and all the purchasing, preparing and serving of the picnic fare was done by the girls themselves. Little Joy Green, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Oren B. Green, was

Members of the troop worked a total of 43 hours with the American Legion Auxiliary during the recent Community Fair, it was learned.

The week of March 8 through 14 is National Girl Scout Week, which is celebrated each year and commemorates the starting of the first Girl Scout Troop by Juliette Low in Savannah, Georgia.

The days of Girl Scout Week are called the Seven Service Days, when the girls make a special effort to show their community what they are doing. Monday is Homemaking Day; Tuesday, Citizenship Day; Wednesday, Health and Safety Day; Thursday, International Friendship Day; Friday, Arts and Crafts Day and Saturday, Out-of-Doors Day.

On Monday, March 8, a tea will take place at Jack Tar Hotel's Jolly Roger Room for all Girl Scouts and their families from 2 to 3:30 p. m., and all parents and those interested in Girl Scouting are urged to attend this tea, which is being held to honor National Girl Scout Week.
