HIGHLY COMMENDABLE.--The late visitation of the Cholera in Lexington, Kentucky, disastrous and terrifying as were its effects, was the occasion of developing some generous and honorable traits of character which deserve to be recorded. The most disinterested charity and sympathy were almost universally shown by the neighboring farmers.- One of the papers states that most of the inhabitants must have suffered from want of food and fire, but for the promptness with which fuel and provisions were sent in, free of charge, from the country.-- One gentleman, Col. B. Taylor, sent daily to the city a cord of fire wood at his own cost, to be distributed among the poor, with a quantity of flour, corn, meal, and bacon.--Another, Col. H. C. Payne, sent daily a number of lambs, for the same purpose, and tendered to the city his whole flock of sheep; and a third, Col. Quarles, gave three or four beeves. Others, whose names are not mentioned, were liberal in the same proportion.- Such generous and liberal charity to the suffering poor, in times of extraordinary distress, redeems the character of human nature from much of the reproach which is so frequently cast upon it by those who only study it in scenes of frivolity, and at seasons when the "deeps" of the heart have not been stirred.
