CAMBRIDGE, Eng., (AP)—The United States has only a 50-50 chance of victory in Korea, a distinguished British military commentator said yesterday.
He is Capt. B. H. Liddell Hart, military editor of the Encyclopaedia Britannica, and author of many books on war strategy.
Hart, speaking at the Liberal Party's summer school, said the danger of defeat arose because the U. S. had followed two conflicting policies.
First, he said, President Truman decided to evacuate Korea in June, 1949, declaring it to be indefensible.
Then, he added, because "The Americans could not bear to watch it happen, Mr. Truman took the steps which staked U. S. prestige on what had previously been judged 'a forlorn hope.'"
"The danger of world war has become acute through two contrary American decisions to withdraw and then return."
