BURNING OF THE SHIP GROTON. We shall be greatly surprised if this matter is suffered to rest by the Insurance Company, without commencing a suit against the Mayor and Corporation of Brooklyn, for the loss of the ship. Twist and turn the matter how we may, the conduct of the Mayor of Brooklyn in this business has been most shameful; in fact, we never heard of such shameful negligence and imbecility, joined to such consummate impudence. The story, as we told it, was the correct one. The attempted refutation published by the Mayor of Brooklyn was false from beginning to end. Had the Mayor done his duty, and suffered the engines to play upon the ship half an hour longer, the flames would have been extinguished, and the vessel saved. But he ordered them, on a paltry, ridiculous pretext, to cease playing, and thus caused the destruction of the vessel. Captain Brown made almost superhuman exertions; he did every thing that man could do; he came to New York, and had he been properly seconded by our authorities, he still would have saved his ship. But after he had paid for one engine to go over, and got it to play, for want of energy on the part of the Mayor of Brooklyn, the engine was prevented from playing. We shall revert to this subject again to-morrow. In the meantime, we can assure the Mayor we will do ample justice, and hand him down to posterity, as the Mayor in whose term the ship Groton was burnt, through his negligence, ignorance and folly.

-A communication appears in today's paper signed Ward, Stillman & Co. relative to the water pipes; but we are not responsible for the statements it contains. It is paid for as an advertisement, and coming from those deeply interested in this matter, on one side, must be taken for what it is worth.
