The Stallion Union.

F. I. Snell recently purchased in San Francisco the celebrated stallion Union, now on exhibition at his stables here. This magnificent animal has a reputation second to none in San Francisco and throughout California. The following letter to Mr. Allen, through whom Mr. Snell made the purchase, from G. H. Jefferson the trainer of Union, regarding his pedigree, will be read with interest:

San Jose, Cal., April 19, 1880.

Mr. Allen—Dear Sir: I have just received your letter of the 17th. The horse Union that Sawyer had was sired by Stockbridge Chief, his dam being San Jose Damsel. San Jose Damsel was sired by Eastern Black Hawk, and her dam was the mother of the running horse, 'Dashaway' by Belmont, that won 21 races out of 23. The old mare's pedigree was never ascertained but from all accounts she was a thoroughbred. Damsel, the dam of Union, trotted in a race for two year-olds in 3:25; the last half in 1:24, winning a $500 purse. Stockbridge Chief was K. Messenger, brought here from New York by Mr. Vibert. I think the horse Union, is as good a horse as was ever owned in this or any other country.

Yours Respectfully,

Geo. H. Jefferson.
