A UNION PROTRACTED MEETING
Commenced in Springville, N. Y. on the 29th of March, and continued sixteen days, during which time we think between 60 and 70 were converted to God. For some time previous the different orders in the place had labored for the salvation of souls with but little success, not being united with each other. But the Lord put it into their hearts to call a general union meeting; accordingly the Presbyterian, Baptist, Methodist, and F. Baptist churches agreed to commence and conduct a union meeting in accordance with the following resolutions.
Resolved, That we as Presbyterians, Baptists, Methodists and F. Baptists, in view of the signs of the times, are called upon to make a united and permanent effort for the salvation of souls, and the advancement of the Redeemer's Kingdom.
Resolved, That we will strive to become temples of the Holy Ghost, that we may keep ourselves in the love of God, and rejoice in each other's success in turning souls to God.
Resolved, That we will strive to lay aside all party spirit and sectarian peculiarities, and come together for a general union meeting.
Resolved, That in our estimation, the spirit of proselyting is opposed to the spirit of the Lord, and has arrested the progress of many most pleasing revivals, and therefore we seriously deprecate this spirit, and solemnly promise to part with it FOREVER.
Resolved, that the ministers and brethren of each denomination, shall have the privilege of an equal share of labor in this meeting.
Resolved, That the ministers of the different orders shall from time to time mutually share in moderating the meeting.
The above resolutions were unanimously adopted by the following ministers of each order. Rev. W. Parmelec, Presbyterian, Eld. Herrick, Methodist, Eld. D. Scarb. Baptist. Eld. H. Whitcher. F Baptist; also by other ministers of each order and by the brethren and sisters.
Dear Brethren,-This meeting was conducted with good feelings and in harmony, not a jarring note was heard. The union and love exhibited made an impression on the minds of hardened sinners which was never made before. Many were awakened by seeing the ministers labor so harmoniously together. Bless God: the union still increases. It is the most blessed moral atmosphere in which I ever breathed. Some came ten or fifteen miles, found the Lord and returned home, and began to tell of the "wonderful works of God:" from which the work commenced in their neighborhoods. Glory to God, the union fire is spreading all through this country, and I can say, Go, Morning Star, and tell the world of this blessed union, and say to ministers and people of every order, "Go and do likewise." Many have recently been converted in Napoli, Otto, Ashford, and Lodi.
My dear brethren, effect this union as fast as possible, for by a united exertion the world will be converted to God.
Yours in love, Hiram Whitcher.
March 22d. I have had the pleasure of baptizing eight happy converts this week. More will go forward soon; all glory to God.
