Mr. Z. C. Patton, proprietor of the News Depot on Market street, was seriously cut in four places yesterday by Allen Griffin, who sells apples on the streets, and is said to be a hard case, as far as we can learn under the following circumstances:
Two boys were in Mr. Patton's store playing checkers when the boy Allen Griffin entered and took up one of their hats, whereupon the boys got in a scuffle, and making a good deal of noise- Mr. Patton told them to go out of the store, which the boys not doing, he caught hold of Allen and while trying to put him out, the boy getting out his knife, stabbed him in the face, breast side and arm, the cut in the arm being the most serious, and which the attending physician says may cause the loss of the arm. Patton having on a thick overcoat, fortunately, prevented the wounds from being more serious than they are.
The boy was taken before the recorder, and his friends appearing and pleading for him, he was leniently dealt with, being released on a fine of $10 and costs.
When our boys, little ones, get to using their knives and carrying deadly weapons, for such bloody purposes, what sort of a future can be looked for, either for them or the community.
